How To Find Products To Sell On Amazon FBA [Step-by-Step Guide]

We asked our students what their biggest roadblock to creating an Amazon FBA business was. The response..

“Finding my own product”

“Losing money on a product that does not sell”

“Since so many products I have bought have been losers, I am afraid of sinking a lot of up front money only to see it not work”

“I picked a poor selling product so feel disheartened”

The Biggest Roadblock Is Not Knowing How To Find Products To Sell On Amazon FBA

In this blog post we are going to show you, step-by-step, how to pick a product with a high probability that it will be profitable (of course we cannot guarantee this 100%).

We have also created a video that walks you through this entire process. The blog post and the video cover the exact same material.

How Do You Find Profitable Products To Sell On Amazon FBA?

There are many different criteria that you should look at before you import your product that dramatically increase your chances of importing a profitable product.

First of all what is a criteria? A criteria is a question we ask about a product that will help us decide if it has potential or not. An example of a criteria would be: is the product selling price between $15 - $75?

We have come up with 35 different criteria that you can use when looking for your product. In this blog post we will show you the 8 criteria we believe to be the most important.

These 8 criteria can be found on our Choosing a Product Cheat Sheet. This cheat sheet is a powerful way to quickly decide if a product has potential or not. If a product is able to pass all 8 of the criteria on this sheet then you should seriously consider importing it.

Answer 2 Questions To Download The Cheat Sheet

1. Do You Live Inside The United States?

Here Is An Explanation Of The 8 Criteria And Why We Chose Them:

Criteria #1: 5 of the top 10 products have a BSR between 2,500 and 25,000.

BSR (Best Seller Rank) is very important to us while we’re looking for potential products. It stands for Best Seller Rank. It’s a way for Amazon to tell us how well a product is selling within a main category.

Example: If we find a special dog leash with a BSR of 500 that means within the main Pet category that leash is the 500th best selling item.

The reason why we want a BSR within this range is because products with a low BSR are making a lot of sales but they also have a lot of competition. On the other hand, products with a high BSR may not have a lot of competition but they aren’t selling very well.

We are looking for products that fall in the sweet spot in the middle. Where there is enough demand to make it worth it to sell that product without it being too competitive.

Criteria #2: None of the top 10 products have a BSR below 500

We want to avoid products that are selling really, really well. If any of the top 10 products have a BSR below 500 it means it will be very hard for us to compete with that seller because they are doing so well.

Criteria #3: Each of the top 15 products has less than 1,000 reviews

It’s important that our competitors don’t have too many reviews. This is because when we go to sell our product we’re starting out with 0 reviews. If we have 0 reviews and our competitors have thousands, it is going to be very hard for us to catch up.

Criteria #4: 10 of the top 15 products have less than 200 reviews

The reason for this is we don’t want our competition to have too many reviews. If they do it’s harder for us to catch up when we’re starting out with 0 reviews.

Criteria #5: The product’s selling price is between $15 - $75

You don’t want a selling price that is too low because your profit margin will be too low, making it not worth it to sell the product. On the other hand, you don’t want a selling price that is too high because that means you have an expensive product which increases your risk because you’re spending a lot more money on inventory.

Criteria #6: The product is durable and unlikely to break while shipping

The last thing we want is a fragile product that is going to break by the time it reaches the customer’s doorstep. It may not be your fault but the customer will blame you and leave a negative review.

Criteria #7: The product size is smaller than 8 x 8 x 8 inches

We don’t want a product that is too big because smaller products will save us a ton of money on shipping costs when we ship from China to our Amazon Warehouse and then from our Amazon Warehouse to our customer.

Criteria #8: The product does not violate any copyrights or patents

This is very important because if it does, we are going to run into lots of legal trouble. For the purpose of our Choosing a Product Cheat Sheet we don’t have to be 100% sure about this answer.

As long as our product appears to not have any copyrights or patents we can mark down the answer as Yes. Later if we are seriously considering importing the product we will want to do deeper research to make sure it doesn’t violate any copyrights or patents.

We Need These 2 Things Before We Look For A Product

The first step is we are going to download a free plugin called Unicorn Smasher. This tool will save us a TON of time when researching products.

To install Unicorn Smasher you are going to need to use the Google Chrome browser. If you don’t already have Google Chrome installed Click Here to get it.

Once you have Google Chrome installed, Click Here to get Unicorn Smasher.

On the Unicorn Smasher website, click on the pink “Get Unicorn Smasher” button. In the popup box type in your Name and Email and then click on the pink “Send Me the Download” button

Download Box For Unicorn Smasher Plugin

Within 5 minutes you will receive a link in your Email Inbox to install the Unicorn Smasher Plugin onto your Chrome browser for free.

Once you get that email, open it and click on “Download Unicorn Smasher Here”. You will be taken to the Chrome web store where you can click on “Add to Chrome” and then “Add extension”

Great! You now understand what we are looking for in a product AND you have installed Unicorn Smasher in Google Chrome.

It’s Time To Look For A Product Using The Choosing a Product Cheat Sheet

Think of this cheat sheet as your expert consultant teaching you exactly how to find products to sell on Amazon FBA.

The way the sheet is designed is, you are looking for a product that can answer “Yes” to all of the 8 questions. If, for a certain product, one of the answers turns out to be “No” you should stop right there and go look for a different product.

We’ve carefully designed all 8 of these criteria to be essential. It will take some time upfront to find a product but the advantage is you will save a ton of time down the road.

You will only take a deep look at products that have already past our Essential Criteria. It gives us a much higher chance that it will be a good product to import later on.

To get started, search we are going to use Amazon's Best Seller List. This list is an incredible tool Amazon has created for us, that shows you all of the best selling items in each category. To open up the list, Click Here.

Remember when we talked about BSR (Best Seller Rank) earlier? We can use this Best Seller List to find items that have enough demand to be profitable AND are not too competitive.

Once you have Amazon's Best Seller List open...

...on the left hand side click on 1 main category that you want to focus your product search in.

For this example I will be choosing the “Pet Supplies” category

Pet Supplies Category On Amazon Best Sellers List

What you will see now is a list of the best selling items in the “Pet Supplies” category. We don’t want to compete with any of these products since they are WAY too competitive.

Competitive Product With A BSR Of 1

That bag of cat food is the #1 best selling item in the “Pet Supplies” category.

To help us find products that have a lower BSR we must look at the subcategories within our main category. In the “Pet Supplies” category we have a bunch of subcategories that include Dogs, Cats, Birds, Horses, etc..

For this example, I’m going to click on the “Dog” subcategory. Now we will get the best selling items in the Dog Supplies subcategory.
Products In Dog Supplies Subcategory

But we don’t care how well a product is selling within its subcategory. All we care about is how well an item is selling within the main, “Pet Supplies” category.

For example, the 10th best selling item in the “Dog Supplies” subcategory may be the 47th best selling item in the main “Pet Supplies” category. You can always ignore the sales rank in a subcategory. That information is not helpful to us.

So the question is, how can you find out how well one of these items is selling in the main category? This is the BSR number that we are interested in.

To do this, click on the item that you are curious about. For this example I’m going to click on a Dog Training Collar that is the 18th best selling item in the Dog Supplies subcategory.

Dog Training Collar With Red Circle Around It

Once you have clicked on the item. Scroll down until you see “Product Details”

Product Details With A BSR Of 27 In The Pet Supplies Category

Under Product Details you will see that this item is the 27th best selling item in the main Pet Supplies category. In other words, this product has a BSR of 27.

Underneath the BSR you will see how well the product ranks in different subcategories. You can ignore these numbers, they are not helpful to you.

If the BSR’s are still too high in a subcategory then you can click on a subcategory within a subcategory.

For example, in the Dog Supplies subcategory we are going to click on Collars, Harnesses & Leashes. The deeper we go into these subcategories the lower the BSR is going to be.

Collars, Harnesses & Leashes Subcategory With A Red Circle Around It

Now we are in the “Collars, Harnesses & Leashes” subcategory that is inside of the “Dog Supplies” subcategory which is inside the main “Pet Supplies” category.

Don’t worry if this is confusing! Once you start playing around with Amazon’s Best Seller List yourself it will to make a lot more sense.

Now I found a product that is the 33rd best selling item in the “Collars, Harnesses & Leashes” subcategory. When we scroll down to Product Details we will see that this product’s BSR is 1,103

Retractable Dog Leash With Red Circle Around It

Product Details With A BSR Of 1,103 In Pet Supplies Category

Let’s say you’ve found a product that you’re interested in and now you want to run it through our Choosing a Product Cheat Sheet. (For this example I will be looking at Hands Free Dog Leash)

Open up a new tab on your internet browser and type in Amazon.com. Here enter in the general name of the product.

Hands Free Dog Leash Typed Into Amazon Search Box
Now it’s time to use our Choosing a Product Cheat Sheet and Unicorn Smasher.

We want to see if the product passes our first criteria. To find out the answer to the first criteria we will use Unicorn Smasher. (we could look up the BSR for each of the top 10 products manually, but that would take a TON of time)

Click on the Unicorn Smasher button in the top right hand corner of your Chrome browser. It will scan all of the top 10 products for us and give us the information that we need.

Hands Free Dog Leash Product Results

Below are the Unicorn Smasher results for this product. Note: BSR is described as “Rank” on Unicorn Smasher.

Unicorn Smasher Results For Hands Free Dog Leash

Now Let’s Look To See If The Product Passes Our 8 Criteria

Keep in mind that if the answer is “NO” for any of these 8 criteria you want to start looking for a different product.

Criteria #1: 5 of the top 10 products have a BSR between 2,500 and 25,000.

YES. 7 of the top 10 products have a BSR in this range.

Criteria #2: None of the top 10 products have a BSR below 500

YES. None of the top 10 products have a BSR below 500.

Criteria #3: Each of the top 15 products has less than 1,000 reviews

YES. All of the top 15 products have less than 1,000 reviews.

Criteria #4: 10 of the top 15 products have less than 200 reviews

YES. 11 of the top 15 products have less than 200 reviews.

Criteria #5: The product’s selling price is between $15 - $75

YES. The average selling price is $16.86.

Criteria #6: The product is durable and unlikely to break while shipping

YES. It is safe to say that a dog leash is not a fragile product and is unlikely to break while shipping.

Criteria #7: The product size is smaller than 8 x 8 x 8 inches

To find out the product size we are going to have to click on one of the product listings and scroll down to Product Details.

Product Details With Product Dimensions Area Highlighted

For this product one of the dimensions is longer than 8 inches but it still passes this criteria. The reason why is we are looking to see if the product could fit in an 8 x 8 x 8 shipping box. In the case of this dog leash I believe it could easily fold to fit inside a box of this size.

YES.

Criteria #8: The product does not violate any copyrights or patents

At this point you want to go with your gut reaction. Is this the type of product that seems like it is copyrighted or patented?

If you don’t think so then you can say the product passes this criteria, however, you will want to check further BEFORE you seriously consider importing the product.

YES. My gut reaction says this product does not violate any copyrights or patents but I would want to do further research before importing this product.

We Have Found A Product!

This product passed all 8 of our criteria! We can seriously consider importing this product now. How many criteria did your product pass? If it is less than 8, keep looking for new products until you find one that passes all the criteria.
